WHAT'S AT STAKE?

Building dams on the Rio Santa Cruz is not a new idea, but in 2014 it gathered steam. Here's a summary of the major issues:
  • The Rio Santa Cruz is the last major Patagonia river flowing to the ocean from the ice caps
  • The dams will cost $5bn, to be invested by China (their largest investment in Latin American infastructure to date)
  • At the time of writing, there has been no official pre-impact study (known as an 'EIA' - Environmental Impact Assessment)

This is the best article to date on what risks being lost if the dams are built. It is in Spanish, but Google translate makes it understandable (if not perfect.)
